Sex-related differences in D-dimer levels for venous thromboembolism screening.

Background D-dimer is generally considered positive above 0.5 mg/L irrespective of sex. However, women have been shown to be more likely to have a positive D-dimer after controlling for other factors. Thus, differences may exist between males and females for using D-dimer as a marker of venous thromboembolic (VTE) disease. Ultrasound (US) guided central venous catheterization of internal jugular vein on over 65-year-old patients versus blind technique.

Background and Objectives Performing a central venous catheterization (CVC) on older patients for long-term central intravenous therapy could be a very important procedure. It could be associated with a high incidence of related complications, especially on over 65-year-old, high risk, selected patients. Methods The authors analyzed the results of 72 central venous CVC of internal jugular vein performed on over 65-year-old patients with ultrasound (US) guide from January 1998 to April 2003. Diagnosis is a prerequisite for all treatment strategies. Duplex ultrasound is the best diagnostic tool for varicose veins for all expressions of the disease (Nicolaides Circulation 102:126–163, 2000). All types of intervention on varicose veins have their own special demands on ultrasound. Ultrasound-guided vein mapping on the skin is very helpful prior to saphenous stripping (See Sect. 12.1), and it is absolutely indispensible for CHIVA (See Sect. 12.2). Objectives: This prospective study was aimed at evaluation of diagnostic value of Doppler sonography and magnetic resonance (MR) venography in the internal jugular vein territory. Material and methods: There were assessed 126 patients (252 internal jugular veins).
